One miner was killed and eight were trapped in a coal and gas outburst at a mine Sunday in southwest China's Yunnan province, authorities said.

The accident occurred around 4 a.m. when 12 miners were tunnelling a mine shaft at the Bailongshan coal mine in Qujing city, reports Xinhua.

Three miners were lifted out of the shaft, the city's emergency response office said.

Rescuers are trying to reduce the gas density to save the trapped miners.

The coal mine is operated by the Diandong Energy Co. Ltd. under the China Huaneng Group, a major state-owned energy company.
