China will work on a counter-terrorism law if the fight against terrorism requires it, a senior Chinese official with the top legislature said here Sunday.

To draft a counter-terrorism law, the legislature will have to evaluate the situation, consult related agencies and conduct research, Xinhua quoted Zang Tiewei, of the government's criminal law division as saying, on the sidelines of the ongoing parliamentary session.

The legislature will have to follow legal procedure, Zang said.

About a week ago, a group of knife-wielding assailants indiscriminately attacked civilians at a railway station in Kunming, provincial capital of Yunnan, causing 29 deaths and injuring 143.
