Over 350 cyclists from the capital and its adjoining areas took to the streets Saturday to mark the International Day of the Girl Child and raise awareness about gender equality and justice.

The cyclothon was flagged off from Ram Lila Maidan and terminated at Central Park, with the cyclists flashing messages concerning gender justice and equality.

"It is an important cause. In a city like Delhi, where the child sex ratio is the lowest (866 girls to 1000 boys), it is important that we come together and show our support for campaigns like Beti Zindabad of ActionAid. The cyclothon is one such way of showing our support," said Kuljan, a volunteer.

The cyclothon was aimed at raising awareness about the issues of sex-selection, malnutrition, school drop-out rates, child marriage, trafficking and violence.

Pankhuri, a participant at the event said, "The cyclothon was held a day after Malala Yousufzai won the Nobel Peace prize. She is a symbol of courage and liberation. I feel nice to be out on the streets celebrating the life and being of every girl and woman in this world, including Malala".

Sandeep Chachra, executive director of ActionAid India, was pleased at the participation of young professionals and students.

"It is encouraging to see the young generation wanting to make a statement through action and words. The Nobel peace prize for the defenders of child rights from South Asia has vindicated our hard work and strengthened our resolve further," added Chachra.
