There is a great need for extending sophisticated medical facilities to poor people in India as they are not able to get proper health care, Delhi Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung said Sunday.

"The government must make available sophisticated medical facilities for the poor people in the country as such arrangements by the government are yet to be availed by them," Jung said in his address on the 25th anniversary of the Fortis Escorts Heart Institute.

The challenge was how and when India will be able to deliver modern and effective health care to its poor, he said.

"I know the government has been trying hard to extend medical facilities to the poor people but the need is to collaborate government health care with the private one," Jung said.

Fortis Healthcare CEO Aditya Vij said that over the 25 years, the hospital has performed several pioneering procedures and set the pace for cardiac treatment in India.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), by the year 2020, over 40 percent of deaths in India would likely be caused by cardiac vascular disease.

Fortis Escorts Heart Institute chairman Ashok Seth said cardiac diseases were increasingly affecting younger people over the last 10-15 years, and underscored the need for continuous advances in cardiac treatment.
