A seven-year-old girl was raped by a shopkeeper near her home in the capital, police said Tuesday. The accused was arrested after locals caught him and beat him up.

The girl was playing outside her home in Harsh Vihar area of east Delhi, when shopkeeper Rajesh lured her to a secluded place and raped her.

When the girl started screaming, he gave her some money and told her not to speak about the incident. But the girl revealed her ordeal to her mother when she returned home.

Her mother told her neighbours before informing the police and they caught Rajesh and thrashed him.

The accused was admitted to a hospital and has been booked for rape.
