The Samajwadi Party Monday said the Jammu and Kashmir government should not be sacked because of the communal violence in the state -- a demand made by BSP chief Mayawati.

"The state alone cannot manage the situation. But dismissing the (state) government is not a solution either," Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav told the Rajya Sabha.

"But central forces will have to be put to action so that terrorists cannot come in to our territory and make the situation worse."

Expressing concern over the situation, Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Sitaram Yechury said the violence was not a localised problem.

"It is something much larger which affects the unity and integrity of the country," Yechury said. "I am disappointed the situation was allowed to deteriorate."

He demanded the central government's intervention.

Sukhendu Sekhar Roy of Trinamool Congress hoped the situation would improve.

"In a state like Jammu and Kashmir, the state and central governments should together take strong measures," Roy said.
