An Egyptian court Wednesday jailed a controversial Islamist leader and former presidential candidate for seven years for falsifying his nomination papers.

Hazem Abou Ismael submitted in his nomination papers for the 2012 presidential elections that he was born to Egyptian parents as required by the constitution but it was later discovered that his mother was an American national, Xinhua reported.

Ismael, the founder of the Rayah Salafist party, is also facing other charges, including inciting violence and murder after former president Mohamed Morsi was removed by the army last July.
