England hold Germany to goalless draw in friendly

Silvia Neid's women footballers were held to a goalless draw by England to conclude the last international duty in 2015.

In Thursday's friendly match, the Germans immediately took over but neither Babett Peter nor Lena Goessling were able to beat England's goalkeeper Karen Bardsley in the opening period, reported Xinhua.

"They challenged us quite a bit. We weren't able to implement our plan as we wanted," Germany head coach Silvia Neid said.

Bardsley remained in the thick of things as she denied Felicitas Rauch in a one-on-one situation before she tipped a 15-metre hammer by Leonie Maier over the bar.

The Lionesses reaped their first chance five minutes before the break when Demi Stokes tested Germany goalkeeper Laure Benkarth with a shot on target.

The flow of the game got disrupted after the break due to substitutions by both sides. However, Germany continued their run of England's goal but Bardsley's faultless performance secured her side a goalless draw on the road.

It was the final match for veteran goalkeeper Nadine Angerer and striker Celia Sasic, as both players retired following the World Cup.

In this match, Germany failed to take revenge of a 0-1 loss in the third place play-off at the FIFA World Championship in Canada.
