One person was injured and several cars were burnt Tuesday when an explosive device went off near a church in Egypt's capital Cairo, media reported.

The explosion came while the Egyptians were casting their votes on the final day of the two-day presidential election being held after the removal of former Islamist president Mohamed Morsi last year, Xinhua reported citing the official news agency MENA.

The homemade bomb was planted in the vicinity of the Adventist Church in the city's northeastern neighbourhood of Heliopolis, MENA quoted a security source as saying. The disposal team combed the scene to search for further bombs.

More than 432,000 army and police personnel have been deployed across Egypt to ensure security during the election amid reports of bombings and protests.

Bomb squads defused six homemade bombs in four provinces during the first day of the polls, but no deaths were reported.

Egypt has faced a surge in violence after the army ousted the country's first democratically elected president Mohamed Morsi last July following mass protests against his turbulent one-year rule.
