Five policemen, including a station house officer (SHO), were injured while trying to stop a mob from beating up two school girls and their two male friends here Tuesday, police said.

The mob also set afire two police motorcycles and damaged a police van.

The incident occurred around 8.30 a.m. at Karawal Nagar in east Delhi.

Police said the mob became angry after a 23-year-old youth named Sunil reached the house of his 22-year-old friend Aamir along with two Class 9 girl students studying in a nearby government school.

"A group of residents got enraged when they saw the two school girls going inside a house with one of the youths," a police official said.

"The mob had surrounded the house. We reached the spot after getting information. When we tried to take the girls and the youths out of the house, the mob started pelting stones at the police team," he said.

The mob badly beat up Sunil and injured five police personnel - SHO Jasod Singh Mehta, sub-inspector Manoj, assistant sub-inspector Yogesh Tyagi, head constable Pramod and constable Rajendra.

The two girls, who were taken out of the house after an hour-long struggle, also received minor injuries.

Sunil was admitted in a hospital while Aamir managed to flee.

A case has been registered against a group of people and inquiry is on, the official said.
