At least five people were killed and seven injured in an explosion in Somalia capital Mogadishu on Monday, Somali officials said.

The incident took place when a car loaded with explosives exploded near the office of the Mogadishu mayor, Xinhua quoted government spokesman Abdi fitah Halan as saying.

"The car drove to the entrance, hitting the wall behind the mayor's office before exploding," said Halan.

The attack came in the wake of several drive-by shootings and car explosions which have hit Mogadishu in the past few weeks.
