At least five people were killed and some 24 others wounded in two bomb attacks in a Shiite-predominant district in Iraq's capital Baghdad Wednesday, a police source said.

A suicide bomber wearing an explosive vest blew himself up at a funeral tent in Sadr City district in eastern Baghdad Wednesday afternoon, leaving at least two people killed and 16 others wounded, Xinhua quoted a source as saying.

Minutes later, a car bomb was detonated at a popular market in the same district, killing three people and wounding eight others, the source said.

The toll could rise as ambulances, police and civilian vehicles evacuated the casualties to different hospitals and medical centres in the city.

Iraq is witnessing its worst violence in recent years.

According to the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq, a total of 8,868 Iraqis, including 7,818 civilians and civilian police personnel, were killed in 2013, the highest annual death toll for years.
