Five people were shot dead in two connected shootings in the US state of Georgia, police said. The suspected gunman is still at large.

The shootings took place in Appling on Friday night. Four persons were pronounced dead at the site and one died on the way to hospital, Xinhua news agency cited the police as saying.

"We're working (on) a multiple shooting. We have five victims, and the sheriff's department is looking for the shooter," a police official said.

"And that's all I can tell you right now because we haven't finished processing the crime scene," he said.

There was no immediate word on the identities of the victims.

The reason for the killings was not yet known, the official said.
