West Bengal Governor K.N. Tripathi on Thursday sought a report from the Mamata Banerjee government over the flyover collapse in the city that so far has claimed 14 lives.
A large chunk, including girders, of the under-construction Vivekananda Flyover in the city's Posta area collapsed crushing people and vehicles. The official death toll as per Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is 14 while at least 78 others have been injured.
Tripathi, who visited the site, expressed grief over the incident.
"The governor has sought a report from the state government on the incident and advised that proper supervision of all under-construction flyovers and bridges across the state may be done at the earliest," said a Raj Bhavan press statement.
While Banerjee has promised taking action against the company engaged in the construction of the flyover, opposition parties - the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress - have blamed the ruling Trinamool Congress.
While BJP general secretary Kailash Vijayavargiya described the disaster as an "example and proof of the corruption by the Mamata government", state Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury demanded the arrest of state Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim.
Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Ashok Bhattacharya, who was urban development minister under the erstwhile Left Front regime, demanded a high-level probe into the incident.
