Even as the furore over the death of a minor school girl after being ragged continues in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, four students of a government college in Hooghly district were arrested Saturday for ragging.

Following the complaint by a second year student of Government College of Engineering and Textile Technology, Serampore to the University Grants Commission, the four students were arrested.

In his complaint, the student alleged that his four seniors under the influence of liquor, repeatedly tortured him physically and mentally after he joined the college hostel Sep 1.

He later fled from the hostel and lodged an online complaint with UGC which informed the college authorities, who after an enquiry found the seniors guilty and lodged a police complaint.

"The anti-ragging squad of the college found the four students guilty and we lodged an FIR following which they were arrested," said principal Sumanta Bhattacharya.

The principal of Christ Church School in North 24 Parganas district was arrested Thursday following the death of Oindrila Das, a class 5 student, apparently due to shock and trauma after she was locked up inside the school toilet by some of her seniors who demanded money from her.

The death, lead to angry protests mostly by parents who resorted to ransacking and also forced principal Helen Sarkar to step down.
