Japanese multinational information technology equipment and services company Fujitsu plans to set up a high-performance computing (HPC) competency centre in India, Andy Stevenson, managing director of Fujitsu, India said here Thursday.

"We are planning an HPC competency centre in India for high-performance computing solutions. It will be headquartered in Bangalore," Stevenson told media persons at a Fujitsu World Tour 2014 event here.

The competency centre will be the fifth such centre for the company globally. The Bangalore unit will be open to customers and partners from November 2014.

The company has 112 clients in the HPC portfolio, which is "growing very significantly", Stevenson said. The company targets 100 percent growth in HPC segment in India.

Fujitsu appointed Andy Stevenson as the managing director for India and as head of Middle East and India. He previously served as the chief executive officer of Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe Ltd (FTEL) and executive director for hosting, networks and security at Fujitsu UK & Ireland.

The company's competency centre in Bangalore is part of the company's vision to expand the possibilities of HPC in potential global markets, and in line with its aim to grow in the Indian market.

Fujitsu envisages that demand for HPC in India will stem from application areas like advanced drug discovery, seismic engineering for oil exploration, automotive designs and a number of other fields.

The company has 3,000 employees in India now to serve people globally. It is in the process of re-organising its India business and wants to "transform India business into IT services business", Stevenson said.
