CCTV surveillance will not work in government offices because bureaucrats will then "start taking money in a hotel", Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told the Goa legislative assembly.
Parrikar, who was speaking during the question hour, was asked if a comprehensive 24x7 CCTV surveillance project being mooted by the state government, would also cover government offices.
"Surveillance will not work in government offices. They (bureaucrats) will start taking money in a hotel," Parrikar said.
The comprehensive system, the chief minister said, envisaged implementation of a state-wide unmanned surveillance system which will be online 24x7 and monitor both human as well as vehicular movement.
"The CCTV project will not cost the government anything. In fact, we will get revenue from it," Parrikar said, adding that the government was working on a system where the surveillance project could be funded and run by a private operator.
Parrikar also said that among some of the key objectives of the CCTV project are "curbing of terrorist and criminal activities, increasing public order and safety, and to record and document security breaches and violations of law".
