Gopalkrishna Gandhi, chairman of the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies (IIAS), the country's premier research institution in Shimla, resigned from his post Wednesday.
Confirming this development, IIAS spokesperson Anurag Sharma said Gandhi, whose term was going to expire in January next, submitted his papers in Delhi.
Official sources said Gandhi, a former governor of West Bengal, did not cite any reason for quitting the post.
The IIAS is an advanced research institution in the field of humanities and social sciences and is housed in the erstwhile Viceregal Lodge, built while Lord Dufferin was viceroy prior to Independence.
