Foraying into the field of waste management, the central government was planning to promote the sale of compost by tagging its sale to that of urea, it was announced on Thursday.
"The Ministry of chemicals and fertilizers will soon bring a proposal before the union cabinet to provide market development assistance on sale of city compost to farmers," Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu told media persons here.
The sale of compost will also be tagged to the sale of urea to promote conversion of municipal solid waste to compost, he said, adding that some models which are being explored include providing one bag of compost for buying every two bags of urea.
Naidu, who was briefing reporters on the occasion of first anniversary of the 'Swachch Bharat Mission', said the government has also decided to coat urea with neem in order to make it available only for farming.
