A defence security guard at the Kochi naval base was found dead early Monday, soon after a gunshot was heard, officials said.

An investigation has begun as to whether K. Sivadasan, 53, shot himself or the gun that he had went off accidentally, police sources said.

The body has been sent for autopsy.

"The case is being investigated by the harbour terminus police station," a Navy official said.

The deceased belonged to Thrissur in Kerala, and is survived by his wife and two daughters both of whom are married.

"The family has been informed and an inquiry is being ordered by the Navy into the incident," the official said.
