A separatist guerrilla and a junior commissioned officer (JCO) of the army were killed in a gunfight in Jammu and Kashmir Tuesday, an official said.

"Troops of the Rashtriya Rifles and special operations group (SOG) of the state police surrounded the Wanderbala forest in Kupwara district early today (Tuesday) following intelligence inputs about the presence of a group of terrorists there," a defence ministry spokesman said.

The terrorists opened fire at the security personnel, triggering a gun battle in which a terrorist was killed.

The JCO was injured in the gun battle and was evacuated to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
