Extending support to the World Medical Association (WMA), the Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Wednesday demanded the release of Ahmed Said, an Egyptian surgeon arrested for his involvement in a protest.

"IMA stands in solidarity with WMA in this cause and strongly condemns this act by the Egyptian authorities. IMA demands the release of Ahmed Said on account of basic human rights," said IMA secretary general K.K Aggarwal.

Egyptian authorities have jailed Said for his involvement in a protest in 2012. The move has been widely criticised by the international medical community.
