The Indian high commission in Dhaka Thursday warned Bangladeshis against agents approaching them offering assistance in obtaining Indian visa.

The State Bank of India (SBI), running the Indian Visa Application Centre (IVAC), was the "only authorised agent" in Bangladesh competent to process Indian visas, bdnews24.com reported citing Sujit Ghosh, spokesperson for the Indian high commission in Dhaka.

The Indian high commission asked Bangladeshis to report to the police if anyone approached them with assistance for Indian visa.

"We advise all applicants, who are approached by the agents who claim to offer assistance in obtaining Indian visas, to immediately report their activities to the local police or law enforcement authorities," Ghosh said.

"We are in constant touch with the government of Bangladesh for taking appropriate legal action against all such illegal activities," he said.

Ghosh said the statement had been issued after media tried to check the high commission's version regarding some recent reports about agents taking money to facilitate visa processing.

According to official Indian sources, Bangladesh sent the highest number of foreign tourists to India in October this year.
