Former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who died on Monday, loved Kerala and Kerala loved him, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said.

"Kalam had lived in Kerala for long and in his heart, there was a special place for Kerala and likewise Kerala loved him dearly," Chandy said.

He said that as a scientist, Kalam won the appreciation of many in India and abroad.

"As a scientist, Kalam took India to great heights in the space segment, and as the president of the country, also won the hearts of many," he said.

Leader of Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan said Kalam provided huge insights in areas of development.

"As president of the country, he related in the most simple manner and gave the much needed impetus to children and the youth of the nation," said Achuthanandan.

Former Supreme Court judge K.T. Thomas said Kalam's greatest virtue was his humility.

"The informality of his, while being the president, was the greatest hallmark of his personality. I was fortunate to receive the Padma Bhushan from him," said Thomas.

Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said that on his last visit to the state, he was also on stage with Kalam.

"When I was speaking in English, he told me that I can speak in Malayalam. His humble nature won the hearts of many," said Chennithala.
