The Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose (NSCB) airport here will soon be upgraded with solar panels to generate power which will cater to about 60 percent of the airport's requirements, an official said on Friday.

"We will be installing solar panels across 55 acres of land which will generate 15-20 MW of electricity. We'll issue tenders shortly for procurement and implementation of these panels," said the airport's director A.K. Sharma.

Authorities have targeted to complete the project by March 2016 and an allocation of Rs.130 crore has been made for the project.

"We have these lands lying vacant where we cannot construct any new buildings as per international norms. We moved ahead with the solar panel proposition," he said.

According to Sharma, these panels will cater to about 60 percent of the airport's electricity needs as they can function only during the first half of the day. During the night-time, the airport will still have to rely on traditional means of electricity.

The airport has also introduced Swagat Seva - a greeting and assistance service which can be availed at both the domestic and international terminals upon payment of Rs.200.

The service which can be availed by any passenger will help in clearing airport formalities and escort till immigration counters. Porterage service will also be provided to the people in need of it. It will also entitle a passenger to avail assistance in cab booking as well further air-ticket purchase.
