India's eastern metropolis Kolkata will become the country's first fully Wi-Fi enabled metro city in the next two or three months, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced here Tuesday.
As a first step, the iconic Park Street will become wi-fi enabled from Feb 5, Banerjee said at the inauguration programme of the 39th International Kolkata Book Fair.
"I am delighted to announce that the rest of Kolkata will be made wi-fi enabled in phases over the next three months. Thus Kolkata will become India's first fully wi-fi enabled metro city," she said.
Reliance Jio will provide wi-fi services to people throughout all the municipal wards.
"This will transform Kolkata into a networked society - Smart, Simple & Secure. Kolkata leads the way in digital world," Banerjee later tweeted.
