Lahiri jumps 15 places to 38th in world golf rankings

Following a tied fifth finish at the 97th Professional Golfers Association (PGA) Championship here, Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri on Monday jumped 15 places up to be 38th in the world rankings that was topped by American Jordan Spieth, who replaced Rory McIlroy.

With an impressive 13-under 275 total, Lahiri finished alongside Brooks Koepka at tied fifth on Sunday at the Whistling Straits course. The 28-year-old Lahiri also overshadowed the previous best-ever finish at one of the four golf Majors of Jeev Milkha Singh, who had taken the joint ninth spot at the PGA Championship in 2008.

Lahiri's move on the world rankings should also lock in the Bengalurean's place with the International Team set to face the United States at the Presidents Cup in South Korea in October.

The current Asian Tour leader has 144.29 points to be 38th. "It's been a fantastic week," said Lahiri.

Reigning Masters and US Open champion Spieth jumped up one place to be first after finishing second in the fourth and final Major of the year.

The 22-year-old American got 648.66 points and replaced Northern Irishman McIlroy, who has 563.41 points after a 17th place finish here.

"2 inevitable things happened today, @JDayGolf winning a major and @JordanSpieth getting to 1 in the world! Congrats guys!! Inspiring stuff!," McIlroy wrote on Twitter.

PGA Championship winner Jason Day of Australia, who on Sunday pocketed his maiden Major title, jumped two places to be third, followed by Bubba Watson and Justin Rose.

Fourteen-time Major champion Tiger Woods' slide continued as the legendary American dropped 24 places to be 286th. The 39-year-old missed the halfway cut at the PGA Championship, the tournament he won four times during his heydays.
