The presidential election in the Maldives scheduled for Oct 19 will not take place, an Elections Commission official announced here Saturday.

Fuad Thaufeeq, president of the Maldives Elections Commission, told a press conference that at least three weeks, or 21 days will be needed for them to manage new arrangements to hold the election again, Xinhua reported.

He said that after the events that unfolded Saturday, the police now have the power to allow or deny the Elections Commission to continue their election effort.
