Rebel Trinamool Congress legislator Shikha Mitra Tuesday criticised the West Bengal government for its "brutal political inference" in the running of the state's educational institutions.

"There is complete anarchy in the education sector. There is brutal political interference by the state government," Mitra told the media a day after she was removed from the posts of chairperson of governing bodies of three city colleges.

Mitra, a legislative assembly member from Chowringhee constituency, said there were no corruption accusations against her.

"In our state now, those whose names have cropped up in corruption cases, they get promotions. Honest ones are removed. This is immoral and undemocratic."

Mitra, wife of party's rebel Lok Sabha member Somen Mitra, was suspended from the party after she revolted.

She said her husband, an MP from Diamond Harbour, would join the Congress soon.

She was Monday removed from the post of chairperson of governing bodies of Surendranath College (morning), Surendranath College (day) and Surendranath Law College.

Calcutta University Vice Chancellor Suranajan Das said the step was taken after the college principals wrote to him that these governing bodies had become non-functional, precipitating an administrative crisis.
