A 32-year-old man's body was found hanging in the toilet of a police station here early on Wednesday, the city police said.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Vijayanta Arya said the body of Raj Kumar, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, was found hanging in the toilet of Jahangirpuri police station in northwest Delhi.
"He had come to the police station in connection with an ongoing inquiry related to a habeas corpus petition where he was a respondent," the officer said.
The Judicial Magistrate and the Sub-Divisional Magistrate were called on the spot and a request for post-mortem examination by a board of doctors was made, Arya said.
Family members told IANS that a woman who worked with Raj Kumar in Delhi had gone missing and he was called to give statement in the case.
Raj Kumar, who had left the job of a security guard in Delhi around 10 months back, came from Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday morning to meet the police officers, according to family members.
His friend Situ Sharma said he dropped him at the police station around 3.30 p.m. on Tuesday.
"Later, the police asked me to leave and I left the station after five minutes," Sharma told IANS outside the Jahangirpuri police station on Wednesday afternoon.
Raj Kumar's 24-year-old nephew Ankit, who lives in Delhi, said Kumar had called him around 4 p.m. on Tuesday and said he's going inside the police station and that he is a little scared.
"What happened in those few hours that he decided to commit suicide? He came by himself to give the statement, why would he do it? I don't believe it," Ankit said.
He said that though Raj Kumar was found dead in the early hours of Wednesday, his family was not informed till 11 p.m.
His body has been moved to Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital in Jahangirpuri and Arya said the home department will form a board to conduct the autopsy.
