Legislator Kamal Kishore Bhagat, a member of All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) - an alliance partner of the ruling BJP in Jharkhand - was sentenced to seven years of imprisonment by a Ranchi court on Tuesday, said a lawyer.
Bhagat was convicted on Monday in a 23-year-old case. The court found him and other AJSU member guilty for attempted murder and extortion. He was sent to Birsa Munda Central Jail.
Bhagat in 1993 barged into the premises which housed neurophysician K.K. Sinha's clinic and sought a donation for a party rally in Patna. According to the complaint, when the doctor refused to give the donation, he was thrashed.
Later, the security men of the doctor thrashed Bhagat and two other AJSU members so brutally that one of the members died.
The Bharatiya Janata Party and the AJSU had fought the 2014 assembly polls together.
