Midfielder Mikel urges Chelsea to consolidate on Palace win

Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi has urged his teammates not to get carried away after an overwhelming 3-0 triumph over Crystal Palace, saying they can't afford to look too far ahead and need to take one match at a time in the English Premier League (EPL).

Oscar, Willian and Diego Costa were on target on Sunday at Selhurst Park as Guus Hiddink's side recorded their biggest league win since last January. With this win, the defending champions are now 14th in the EPL.

"There are a lot of games to be played and if we can keep putting in these kind of performances the sky is our limit. We need to keep believing but we don't want to get carried away, we played well but we need to keep working hard in training," Mikel told chelseafc.com.

"Let's hope it's a new year and a new Chelsea. We've been disappointed with our results but we've shown what type of team we are," the Nigeria international added.

Captain John Terry was also pleased to kick off 2016 with a good win as they have not lost in the last four games.

"It was the Chelsea of last year. The football was first class, we kept the ball and they were tough conditions; windy, rainy and with a lot of zip on the surface," Chelsea said.

"We have to keep winning games. We've had a couple of draws of late and we have to pick up more points but we're delighted with the win, it feels good and that's what we want."

The iconic defender also praised head coach Hiddink, who replaced Jose Mourinho last month, for giving confidence to the players.

"Guus has been great since he came in. It's unfortunate it happened and we feel as though we let everyone down. Much like he did last time, he's picked everyone up. We are where we are and we need to start climbing the table," Terry pointed out.
