An angry mob went on a rampage in Loni town in Ghaziabad district after a speeding truck rammed into a motorcylist and his minor son, police said Saturday.
The incident occurred Sunday morning at Behta Bridge under Loni police station here.
Atal Sharma, 35, was going to Delhi on his motorcycle with his 12-year-old son, Diwakar. A speeding truck coming from the opposite direction rammed into the motorcycle, killing Atal instantly. His son was critically injured.
Locals rushed Diwakar to hospital, where his condition is stable, police said.
When police reached the spot after over an hour, locals clashed with them and set ablaze about a dozen vehicles.
Police used tear gas shells and fired in the air to control the mob. About half-a-dozen police personnel were injured.
District Magistrate S.V.S. Ranga Rao announced compensation of Rs. 25,000 to the deceased's kin and widow pension and free education for her children.
