Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif hit it off during their meeting Monday evening, with Sharif sharing "some very emotional things" with the new Indian prime minister.
Modi took to twitter to recount his meeting with Sharif. Modi, who was sworn in as India's 14th prime minister Monday evening, wrote: "Earlier in the evening in my conversation with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif he shared some very emotional things.
"Nawaz Sharif ji told me that he stays in Islamabad but goes to meet his Mother once in a week. "This time when he was eating with his mother he saw visuals on TV of my mother offering me sweets.
"The visuals touched both Nawaz Sharif ji & his mother. He told me that after seeing the visuals his mother got very emotional."
Sharif, who arrived Monday morning to attend the ceremony, was among the first to shake hands with Modi to congratulate him after he had taken oath.
Modi also got down to work immediately after the ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan, including a private dinner thrown by President Pranab Mukherjee for the new council of ministers and leaders of eight neighbouring countries.
He wrote at night: "Reached Gujarat Bhavan after the programmes at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Will begin my first official briefing meeting with officials shortly."
