Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday marked his arrival in Bangladesh by paying homage at the National Martyrs' Memorial.
"Remembering the sacrifice of the Liberation Struggle. PM @narendramodi at the National Martyrs' Memorial," Vikas Swarup, spokesperson for the external affairs ministry, tweeted.
"Memorial gives impression of rising from the ashes like a phoenix. It symbolises courage & determination of people," Prime Minister Modi tweeted.
The PMO India tweet described the memorial as consisting of seven distinct triangles indicating seven stages of the national movement of Bangladesh that led to its Independence."
"Foundation Stone for Jatiyo Smriti Shoudho was laid by Bangabandhu himself. Design was chosen from various entries obtained in a competition," Modi tweeted.
Modi arrived earlier in the day at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in a special Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft, IAF Rajdoot. He was received, in a break from protocol, by his Bangladeshi counterpart, Sheikh Hasina.
He was accorded a ceremonial welcome, after which he inspected a guard of honour.
