President Pranab Mukherjee has written a letter to Italian President Sergio Mattarella, conveying his condolences on the loss of lives and destruction of properties in the massive earthquake that struck central Italy.
"I was deeply saddened to hear of the earthquake that struck Central Italy," the President said in a statement on Friday.
"On behalf of the people of India, I offer heartfelt condolences to those who have lost family members or seen their homes and property destroyed. We pray for the speedy recovery of the injured and for the success of the rescue efforts launched by your Government and local authorities," an official press release issued here quoted Mukherjee as saying.
A devastating earthquake that hit the central Apennines on Wednesday killed over 260 people and injured 400.
