Nine people were killed Tuesday in a stampede at a military institute in Egypt's Suez Canal city of Ismailia, an Egyptian military spokesman said.

The stampede took place as relatives of the students of the institute of the non-commissioned army officers in Tel El-Kebir gathered around the gates of the facility, Xinhua reported citing spokesman Mohamed Samir.

Five others were wounded in the accident and were transferred to nearby hospitals.

The Egyptian Armed Forces extended condolences to the families of the victims, according to the statement.
