Nine people are still missing after Thursday's boat accident which took place in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur city and claimed the lives of two people, officials said on Friday.
Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Friday announced an ex-gratia of Rs.1 lakh each to the next of kin of the dead.
He said that the boat capsized in the Ganga river late on Thursday when a family went midstream to immerse the idol of Lord Ganesha.
The incident took place at Siddhnath Ghat in Jajmau area where despite a ban on entry into the river, the family of Rajesh Agarwal took a boat ride for the immersion.
Two people were rescued by divers from Pradeshik Armed Constabulary, an official told IANS.
