One person was killed in Saharanpur Thursday when a grenade he discovered in a forest area exploded, police said.
Amarjeet, 40, went to pick wood in Sherpur village in the morning and found a grenade on the way.
Not knowing that the grenade could be a live one, Amarjeet threw it to the ground. The grenade exploded and killed him on the spot.
Police officials told IANS that villagers rushed to the spot after hearing the explosion. Police sent the body for post-mortem examination after preliminary investigation.
Officials said an Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) team a few days back did some shooting exercise in the jungle and might have left the grenade behind by mistake.
"We are probing how the grenade reached the jungle. We will ask ITBP officials too," an investigating official said.
