Paresh Baruah's ailing mother declines government help

Miliki Baruah, the ailing mother of ULFA's militant 'commander' Paresh Baruah, on Thursday declined offer of financial assistance by the Assam government and urged Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to spend the money on the flood-hit people.

"I do not want the money. My condition is very bad and I am not going to live longer. The government should give the money to the flood-hit people of Assam or to some other people who are in need," Miliki Baruah told the media at a hospital in Dibrugarh district.

Gogoi on Wednesday said his government would consider on humanitarian grounds if Paresh Baruah desires to see his ailing mother and extended a financial assistance of Rs.1 lakh for her treatment.

Miliki Baruah, 88, was admitted to a private hospital in Dibrugarh on Tuesday after she complained of palpitation and breathing trouble.

She lives with one of her sons at her home at Chabua in Dibrugarh district.

Paresh Baruah alias Paresh Asom leads a faction of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) that is opposed to any peace talks with the Indian government.

He has lived out of the country since 1990s, particularly after the Indian Army launched the first major operation against the rebel group and believed to be operating from camps in areas of Myanmar bordering India.
