A day after he said Goa will aim to become India's model cashless state, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Saturday chaired a meeting of the state's top bureaucrats to discuss ways to go cashless.

The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary R.K. Srivastava and other senior officials. Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Rathore too was present.

"The Defence Minister laid stress on creating special applications to conduct cashless transactions across government departments, including for sales tax, excise, public transport etc.," a senior official told reporters.

On Friday, speaking at a poll rally in Sanquelim, 35 km from Panaji, Parrikar said: "Time has come to go towards a cashless society. We should cooperate with the government. Cashless society will be achieved in Goa first. We will fulfil the Prime Minister's request in this regard."

The official said the focus was on 10,000 registered liquor vendors in Goa, along with 26,000 registered traders.

"If we can make liquor vendors and traders in Goa to sell their goods without cash transactions by using app, we will succeed in eliminating the cash crunch," the official said, adding that camps would be held across Goa before December 31 to create awareness on cashless transactions.
