Pune institute to find solution for Goa beach erosion

The Pune-based Central Water and Power Research station has been asked to recommend a solution for erosion of Goa's popular beaches, Water Resources Minister Vinod Palienkar told the Goa assembly on Tuesday.

"The major stresses on the beaches is referred to Central Water and Power Research Station in Pune who conduct model studies and recommend solutions which are implemented by the Water Resources Department," Palienkar said in a written reply to a question by Congress MLA Isidore Fernandes, adding efforts were on to stop erosion of sand along the state's coastline.

Goa's sandy shores attract more than four million tourists every year but the increased footfalls on the state's beaches and global warming have resulted in erosion of sand along the coast.

In a written reply, Tourism Minister Manohar Azgaonkar also told the assembly that around Rs 3.03 crore was being spent for providing CCTV coverage of Miramar, Colva, Benaulim, Dona Paula and Palolem beaches.
