Prisoners lodged in Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli Jail attacked the jailor on Tuesday, leaving him seriously injured after he ordered an inspection of the inmates for contraband, officials said.
An FIR was registered against some jail inmates for attacking the official after he ordered a search of the prison inmates for contraband, police said.
Jailor Dheeraj sustained serious injuries and is being treated at a local medical facility, an official told IANS.
Police later said security has been tightened inside the prison and the suspected assailants have been quarantined from the general space.
"This is a serious matter and will be dealt with, with all the seriousness it deserves," a state government official said, adding that the prison inspection would continue.
In the past months, many banned items like weapons, drugs, liquor and cell phones have been found inside the state prisons, prompting the jail authorities to order a crack down.
