Rains hit Delhi after humid spell, 4% extra rainfall in country

After a week long spell of hot and humid weather, the national capital had a rainy day on Wednesday with the minimum temperature settling at 28.8 degrees Celsius, the weather office said.

Aya Nagar in south Delhi received the maximum rainfall at 61 mm.

The weather department said that overall four per cent extra rainfall had been recorded in the country.

Rainfall has been 18 per cent deficient in the Harayana, Chandigarh and Delhi region.

About 11 flights, nine domestic and two international, were diverted from IGI airport, that received 17.2 mm of rainfall.

"A total of 11 flights were diverted from the IGI airport due to heavy rains. Out these nine were domestic, while two were international," airport sources said.

According to sources, all the flights returned to the IGI airport by 6 p.m.

"Light rain or thundershower are likely to occur on Wednesday as well," an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

The official said that 1.4 mm rain was reported at Safdarjung observatory, 35.0 mm rain recorded at the Ridge observatory and 0.9 mm at Lodhi Road.

The humidity level at 8.30 a.m. was at 92 per cent.

The maximum temperature hovered around 35.0 degrees Celsius, a notch below the the season's average.

Monday's maximum temperature settled at 34.8 degrees Celsius, one notch below the season's average, while the minimum was at 28.7 degrees Celsius, a notch above the season's average.
