The Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) Tuesday welcomed the Supreme Court's order asking states and union territories to set up police complaint authorities (PCAs) within three months to deal with public grievances related to law enforcers.

The court Monday issued notice to the central and state governments on a petition seeking direction to set up the complaint authorities.

The authorities comprising competent and independent people were mandated by the apex court by its 2006 verdict related to police reforms.

"This was a requirement of the now seven-year-old Supreme Court directions for police reform given in the Prakash Singh case," said a CHRI statement.
