Star batsman Rohit Sharma, who went under the knife in London for a problem in the right thigh, thanked his fans for their wishes and said he cannot wait to get back to the cricket field.

"All went well. Thank you for your good wishes. Can't wait to be back at it," Rohit wrote in his Twitter handle after his surgery.

Rohit has undergone successful surgery on his right upper quadriceps tendon in London, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Saturday.

Rohit, who suffered an injury on his right thigh during the fifth One-Day International (ODI) against New Zealand last month at Visakhapatnam, is likely to be discharged from the hospital by Sunday evening.

"The medical team of the BCCI confirms that India batsman Rohit Sharma underwent a surgery on his right thigh on Friday in London," the BCCI said in a statement.

"The procedure was successful and Rohit will be discharged from the hospital in the next 24 hours."

"BCCI medical team is constantly monitoring his treatment and will oversee his recovery, towards becoming match fit," the statement added.

The surgery and the recovery process effectively rules Rohit out of the ongoing home series against England after he wasn't picked for the Test squad.

He is unlikely to be fit for the limited overs matches that begin on January 15 comprising five ODIs and three T20s.
