Russian medical student sentenced for recruiting for IS

A Russian court on Tuesday sentenced a medical student to seven years in prison for creating a cell to recruit fighters for the Islamic State (IS) terror group.

The sentence was issued by the court of the North Caucasus military district in the city of Rostov del Don, Efe news reported.

According to the investigations, Sultan Yajiayev, led a group of Islamists who circulated IS propaganda to recruit fighters to be sent to Syria.

Along with Yajiayev, the court sentenced five members of the cell to five and six years in prison.

According to the latest data from the interior ministry, about 2,000 Russians are currently fighting along with the IS in Syria.
