Situated amidst an array of plush restaurants and bars in Gurgaon's Sector 29 market is a unique Gothic, theme-based kitchen and brewery, The Addams House, which pays ode to the popular American animated series "The Addams Family".
The uniqueness of the place, which opened its doors for public last month, is exemplified by its ideas, which are taken from Gothic architecture, juxtaposed with the essentials of a modern restaurant-cum-bar. Even the exterior of the restaurant is eerily reminiscent of the famed Addams Family House with its emphasis on shades of grey.
Upon entering the restaurant, one notices false stairs, sofas designed in the way of a coffin and bar chairs with spider-web designs among a plethora of spooky elements that would enthral die-hard fans of the series or those with a liking for such dark themes.
But what really catches one's attention is a gigantic wall installation of The Addams Family with all the characters of the series. To make things creepier, two false hands holding bulbs are mounted beside the installation.
Talking about the inspiration of the restaurant, co-owner Karan Parvesh Singh told IANS: "As I was born in the 1980s, I was always a fan of cartoons. I was a big fan of 'The Addams Family'. That was something I grew up with and I wanted to come up with something unique.
"We came up with the idea last year in October and we wanted to deliver a restaurant which could actually make you relive your memory of the childhood days. By November-end we made sure the concept took shape," he added.
The restaurant houses a large bar, with incandescent lighting and wooden carvings atop it. One could comfortably be seated at the bar and enjoy the meals along with the drinks on offer.
It's logical for a restaurant called The Addams House to have names of food items inspired by the series. Dishes named Addams Indian Lamb Chops, Morticia's P-Major Symphony, Wednesday's Favourite and Bun Trapped Evil Chook Burger indicate that the inspiration behind the restaurant is indeed genuine.
There is a lot in store for the alcohol lovers too. Cocktail lovers can try the deliciously concocted Death from Below, a fruity cocktail with cranberry and white rum notes, to beat the heat. Beer lovers can enjoy the three brews -- Belgium Wheat Beer, Dark Lager and Pilsner -- on offer. The Dark Lager especially is a brilliant drink, with a rich and smooth malt taste.
As part of the media tasting, the guests were served portions of various dishes including the chicken quesadilla and grilled fish, both of which were succulent and rich in taste. Special emphasis was given to the presentation of the dishes, which complemented their taste and flavour.
For lovers of Japanese food, beautifully decorated sushi rolls too were on offer, which were presented on a pan with boiling water with a hint of smoke. Besides that, a unique version of Gol Gappas (Pani Puri) with alcoholic shots were offered too.
In a nutshell, The Addams House is an apt place for both fans of the series and also for serious foodies, who like to experiment with their taste. On a side note, the aura of the place could be enriched with apt music -- a subtle mix of classic gothic rock or even classical symphonies -- to really create a captivating environment suitable for a place like this.
