The engine of the Sealdah Express derailed on Thursday in Uttar Pradesh between Jafarganj and Akbarpur stations, disrupting rail traffic on the route, an official said.
The train was going from Jammu to Howrah in West Bengal. While no one was injured in the incident, the Lucknow-Varanasi-Faizabad route was temporarily closed for trains.
Due to the derailment, Kiran Express, Bareilly-Varanasi Janata Express, and more than half-a-dozen trains were halted at various stations.
"We are trying to restore the traffic as soon as possible," Station Master of Akbarpur railway station, Jiya Lal Yadav told IANS.
Senior officials have rushed to the site of the derailment and a probe has been ordered.
