A car bomb explosion in Lebanon's northeastern border town of Arsal Monday injured the owner of the car and several others, media reported.

The car bomb exploded an old municipality building and the Grand Mosque in Arsal, Xinhua reported, citing Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA).

The explosive was reportedly placed under the driver's seat of a 4x4 GMC, owned by Hassan Ezzeddine.

According to the NNA, the blast "severed Ezzeddine's feet and he was rushed to hospital in an ambulance".

Arsal, which shares a 50 km border with Syria harbours at least 45,000 Syrian refugees.

It has been the scene of fierce clashes between fundamentalist gunmen of the Al Qaida-linked Al Nusra Front and the Islamic State (IS), and the Lebanese army.

Earlier in August, fighters from the Al Nusra Front and IS stormed Arsal, killing at least 17 soldiers and capturing more than 20 soldiers and policemen in a cross-border raid.
